4300 BE – Stately Castle for sale in Hergenrath, Belgium

This extraordinary property was originally built in 1260 on a plot with an area of about 270,000 m² (66 acres). In the 15th century an annex was added to the southeast side of the castle. Around 1640 a part of the fortress burnt down but was soon restored and yet another annex was added. In 1897 the castle became the residence of the manufacturer Theodor Nellessen. In the same year Nellessen commissioned Ludwig von Arntz, the then master builder at Strasbourg Cathedral, to renovate the castle and convert it into a manor house. In the 19th century those parts of the house that were not occupied at the time were used for guided tours of the former castle. Since 1952 the castle has been unoccupied.
The property consists of the manor house proper and ancillary structures, which can be extended to provide a living area of up to 4,000 square meters (43,055 sq ft). In addition, the property includes barns, stables, and other buildings such as a church, as well as about 12,000 square meters (3 acres) of arable land. This property would be ideal for hospitality or hotel projects with a historical touch.
